Why Your Percentage Calculation Might Be Wrong
Sounds simple โ divide marks by total, multiply by 100. But when it comes to CGPA conversions, things get messier. Different universities use completely different formulas, and using the wrong one can mean a difference of 5โ8 percentage points on your resume. That's not a small thing when you're applying to jobs with a "60% minimum" criteria.
The Most Common Formulas Explained
Marks to Percentage โ (Marks Obtained รท Total Marks) ร 100. Straightforward, but make sure you're using the total marks for all subjects, not just theory.
CBSE CGPA to Percentage โ Multiply CGPA by 9.5. So a 8.2 CGPA = 77.9%. This is official CBSE guidance.
VTU โ CGPA ร 10 โ 7.5. So 7.5 CGPA = 67.5%.
Anna University โ (CGPA ร 10) โ 0.75.
4.0 Scale GPA โ Common in US universities. We convert it proportionally (GPA รท 4.0) ร 100.
Tip for Job Applications: When a company asks for percentage and you have a CGPA, use your university's official formula and mention the formula used โ e.g., "7.8 CGPA (74.1% as per CBSE formula)". This avoids confusion and shows transparency.

Yes, in most cases you can write both โ "7.2 CGPA / 68.4%". Many modern companies actually prefer CGPA since it's more precise. But for government job applications (SSC, UPSC, Banking), always calculate and enter the percentage using the formula your university prescribes.
