Why Does Age Matter So Much in Government Jobs?
If you've ever prepared for a government exam, you know age limits aren't just a formality â they're a hard cutoff. Miss it by even a single day and your application gets rejected outright. No exceptions, no appeals (unless you qualify for age relaxation).
The tricky part is that the cut-off date varies by exam. UPSC uses 1st August, SSC generally uses 1st January, many state PSCs use different dates, and RRB notifications specify their own dates. Our calculator lets you set the exact cutoff so you get an accurate answer.

Age Relaxation Rules (2025)
OBC (NCL) â 3 years relaxation over general upper limit
SC / ST â 5 years relaxation over general upper limit
PWD (General) â 10 additional years
PWD (OBC) â 13 additional years
PWD (SC/ST) â 15 additional years
Ex-Servicemen â Length of military service + 3 years
J&K Domicile â 5 years in central govt exams
For General category, SSC CGL upper age limit is 32 years. But "32 years" means you should not have completed 32 years as on the cut-off date â meaning you can be exactly 32 and still eligible if you haven't turned 33 yet. Use our calculator with the official cutoff date to confirm.
General category gets 6 attempts between ages 21â32. OBC gets 9 attempts up to age 35. SC/ST candidates get unlimited attempts up to age 37. Note that even appearing for the preliminary exam counts as an attempt (from 2021 onwards).
In most central government exams, yes. However, your OBC NCL certificate must be valid as on the cut-off date, not just the date of application. An outdated certificate (usually valid for 1 year from the date of issue) will cause your relaxation to be rejected.
